The 2010 MLB Draft

The 2010 MLB draft has come and gone. Aside from the fact that there were several rounds of draft picks, many headed to the minor leagues. So what is happening behind the scenes at this point? For a top pick, more than likely they have hired a sports agent to represent them. This will hopefully enable them, using the agent, to get a great signing bonus and a good contract. These things are a huge deal really. It is important for the agent to not underestimate what their player is worth. Agents like Scott Boras even hold their draftees out for very large sums of money. Some agents wait for other agents with top picks to make the first move. Once they make a move, then other agents can see what various rounds and picks are going for as far as bonuses are concerned.

In a way it is a game, just not the game of baseball. The agents have a ton to gain from these very large deals. Most of their money will usually come from endorsement deals though, where an agent can sometimes make up to 25% of that deal. Not bad considering they usually get 3% from the regular bonuses and salary.
