Ratings And Money

While the Yankee and Angel fans in the world have great comfort in knowing that their team is moving on to the next round in the playoffs and ending in a sweep, TBS is not as happy. TBS, taking over the MLB playoffs for TV this year, is not at all pleased with the sweeps.

It makes perfect sense; the playoffs mean more money to the station through the selling of advertisements. The more games there are spread out over a long period of time the better the revenue for the station.

It has been nice that the ratings for the 2009 playoff season have been up over 10% from last year. -A very nice improvement. Improvements like that will make the ads more costly for advertisers as the playoffs move on however. But when the number of games played goes down, ratings don’t make up the difference.

On a plus side, the fact that big teams made it once again to the playoffs certainly helps matters. The Yankees and Red Sox draw bigger audiences than other teams do. The fact that the Red Sox are out could cause some rakings to drop though, but for the most part TBS is looking for a longer, more drawn out series. The more games there are the more money that is made. It’s more than just baseball!
