Sports agents have really changed the way players sign contracts and get paid. One of the biggest agents by far in the world is Scott Boras. He is one of the MLB’s top sports agents. His client list is huge and the deals he gets for his clients are usually tough to beat. When it comes to getting money for draft picks, Boras usually sets the standard each draft year. This last year he had most of his top draft picks hold out for quite some time. While other agents had their clients signing on the dotted line for good money, Boras had his clients wait in hopes for much more money.

Are agents good for the game? Lots of people say no. No matter what you think, the profession has gained much more recognition over the past few years. With the huge sponsorship and endorsement contracts being signed by their clients, agents are making massive salaries.

Agents can make anywhere from 1% up to even as high as 30% on various contracts. WOW, amazing. For most people at those rates it would only take having one client to make a good living off of. Before you rush out to be an agent though, the profession is tough and extremely cut throat. You better know your stuff before entering this line of business.

The MLB draft is usually held in June and doesn’t stop for a few days. I was drafted out of high school in the 49th round, and the rounds can go mush higher than that if there is a substantial enough talent pool to choose from. With most of the players heading straight to the minor leagues, this causes people to lose interest in caring what happens at the draft.

Now the NFL draft has become an event that is televised and heavily followed. There are just a few rounds, typically the first couple only matter. The players go straight from college to the NFL. No stop off in the minor leagues.

Sports agents like Scott Boras have made the MLB draft a lot more interesting though. Each year he typically will get the highest dollars for his clients compared to the rest of the agents with players in the draft.

Are the players worth it? Some aren’t, some don’t even make it to the MLB rosters, yet earn millions in signing bonuses. It may seem crazy but that is the risk the teams are willing to take to grab a hold of the top clients. So no matter what, this is where the next generation of big leaguers will pass through, the MLB draft!
