The MLB Salary

Posted on: December 8, 2009 by admin No Comments

It just came out in the news here that the average salary of an MLB baseball player is about 3 million. Can you imagine some of these guys who can barely hit near a .200 average getting paid 3 million or more, -yikes. The Yankees, world champs of course, had an average salary of over 7.6 million. This is more than double the league average. Sure it may be hard for some to accept, but paying people millions of dollars to fail is rarely done in any other industry. Of course everyone can have a tough season now and then, but you would think at some point that part of the player’s salary would be performance based. Now there are obviously some players making near this 3 million that have gone above and beyond the average when it comes to play. More than likely they will be paid much more when their new contract comes up for negotiation.

So what do you think? Are most of the players playing worth the salaries they are being paid? How does it hurt or help the league when some teams have more than twice the money that others do? Well it sure seems like things will not be changing soon, so it looks like the huge salaries are here to stay.

Violence and the MLB

Many baseball fans are also fans of more contact style sports. These may include football, hockey, boxing, mixed martial arts, or even rugby. One must admit though that there is something nice about baseball being played in quite the opposite way. Nobody likes watching golf because the golfers spend time beating up on one another. They like the sport for what it is, as more of a gentlemanly approach to sports.

For many, baseball is really the same way. Sure, it has quite a bit more action than golf. And yes, you may see some outfielders plow into each other running after a pop fly. And of course there are some fans out there that like to watch a batter that has been dinged by a pitch rush the mound. Many people will remember Nolan Ryan putting Robin Ventura in a head lock and beating him when he was rushed. Take all of this from the game though and baseball is still great. There is no need for batters being hit or seeing them rush the mound.

So what is your take on it? It may all be a part of the game, but for lots of fans out there it is a part of the game we can certainly do without.

Winter Ball

Posted on: December 4, 2009 by admin No Comments

As the cold weather sets in around most of the United States, baseball players looking to get in some extra play time are stuck with few options. One popular option is that players will head to the Caribbean to play ball. This can be a great place for minor leaguers or previously injured players to get some play time in. Also, players needing a new home like Carlos Delgado look to play here and show their stuff in hopes of finding a free agent contract with a team in 2010.

Lots of the players that head here to play have something they want to prove. MLB scouts are always on the lookout here for players that may be worthy enough to sign and join the clubs back in the US. On the other hand, top players usually use this time to rest and take a break. The MLB seasons can be very long and rough on players and their bodies.

This also can be a great economy booster for the area. Lots of times areas like this really rely on tourism to fuel their economy. Having some good big league players around certainly can help. So if you’re on vacation in the area, you never know what MLB star you may see.
