Who’s The Oldest?

Posted on: April 16, 2010 by No Comments

Do you know who the oldest team in major league baseball currently playing as of 2010 is? Back in 1869 The Cincinnati Reds, who were at the time the Cincinnati Red Stockings started as the first professional ball team. Some people may have disputes about it but history basically shows them to be the oldest. The next couple of teams that are really old would be the Chicago Cubs and the New York Yankees.

Back then the MLB had not officially formed, but these teams were considered to be the Pro’s and they were certainly the best. Many times there were few teams that could even come close to beating them. But they played on, more competition joined, then eventually the MLB formed.

Here Comes the Draft

Posted on: April 15, 2010 by No Comments

As college and high school baseball heads into the summer in full swing, the college draft will be right around the corner. The MLB draft is usually held in June and college and some high school players from around the world are hoping to secure a spot being drafted by a major league baseball team. The draft can be a very exciting thing. In baseball the draft can go as many rounds as teams choose to go. Some years it has been in the 40′s and at times well over that as far as rounds go. The prime spots of course like any draft are the first few rounds. Yet there have been some great players that have come from later rounds in a draft still. Agents have been scouting out clients since day one and are hoping to sign some of these top round players to their client list. They stand to make quite a bit of money if they end up with a player chosen in the first couple of rounds. Signing bonuses can end up in the millions and each year they continue to get higher and higher.

Dressing Up At A Game

Posted on: April 14, 2010 by No Comments

Have you ever seen a ball game from the past? It probably would be from a movie, or some old film you have seen here and there. But the fans back then used to, or by our standards today, they would dress up for the occasion. Men wore suits and ladies that did attend wore dresses.

Now you just really don’t see that. It is very casual, although back then to them they were being casual. It seems that times have just changed. More and more women and children attend games today as compared to 50 years ago or more.

Whether you think it’s odd for people to dress up at a ball game, they did not think so in the least. They enjoyed the game and in a way that was all that mattered.

The Mound

Posted on: April 12, 2010 by No Comments

Not much thought goes into certain aspects of the baseball field, but in reality tons of time is spent on making it look just perfect. They make sure that the infield grass looks 100% perfect and level. To ensure water does not stand on the field long after a rain, the field slopes slightly to ensure perfect water runoff. These are just a few points to consider.

The pitchers mound has to be especially well cared for. The pitchers lead/landing foot can tend to dig a hole at the end of the mound. The mound cannot be too high and if it is too low it can seriously hamper the pitchers effort when it comes to his performance. The rubber where the pitcher pushes off from has to be the right length and width; it must be buried at just the right depth in the ground as well. The mound could very well be one of the hardest and most important parts of a ball field to maintain. Sure, it may just appear to be a mound of dirt, but to the pitcher it has to be just right. So when you head out to a game, take notice at the care that goes into maintaining the field.
