More Perfect Games

2010 seems to be the year for perfect games. Two have been thrown thus far. One was almost to be the other night for a Detroit Tiger pitcher. In a pitcher’s worst nightmare, he made it to the 9th, had 2 outs, and a ground ball was it that pulled the first baseman to the bag. The pitcher made a great play covering the bag, caught the ball and stepped on the base before the runner got there. But it turns out that the umpire did not see it that way. He saw it that the runner was safe. Certainly the unwritten rule in baseball is that the tie goes to the runner. But in this case there was no tie as the umpire simply just blew the call. Blown calls happen; they are a fact and evidence that we are all human. This blown call happened to have much more serious consequences though. And with no instant replay for calls like this, the call stood. Don’t feel too bad for the pitcher; it seems people felt sorry for him enough that the team and Chevrolet gave him a new convertible Vette.
